Studentparty mei Afdrukken
First off: welcome to the mei website! Have a look around the site. You can use the menu on the left of the page to navigate through the different english articles.

Mei (short for 'macht en inspraak', meaning 'power and influence' for students) is the oldest student party at the UvA, with divisions in all the student councils. The members of mei review the plans of the university board and offer proposals of their own. In their work they have the support of their mei colleagues from the different councils, with whom they regularly work together. This structure combined with enthousiasm helps the members of mei to be the best student representatives the UvA has to offer.

Mei considers it very important that students study out of interest, that they feel at home at university and are willing to make the effort it takes to enjoy an academic education. This also means that mei values it greatly that students are active and that they are heard. Students are no consumers and lecturers do not deliver education as a product. A good education is the result of curiosity, enthusiasm and a good report between lecturer and student; these taken together form the ingredients of something mei calls the academic community.

About the student council
The student council (FSR) is the official place where students have influence on the faculty about the things that matter for them. We represent every student of the faculty and have a meeting with the board of the faculty every six weeks. We give them advice about diverse subjects that are important for students.Student councils have an advisory function. There are two types of advice

  • Advice that was asked for through the approval right and advice right
  • Advice that was not asked for through the initiative right

Advice right means that the dean is obligated to ask for advice before a decision on certain subjects is made. In case of approval right the council must give a positive advice before a decision can be made. The initiative right means that the council may give advice on any subject, wether there is asked for that advice or not, the dean must give an answer to every advice within six weeks.Besides the facultary student councils there is the central student council (CSR). The CSR is doing the same thing but on university level. The facultary student council is chosen through elections every year. The elections are in May, and a council operates one college year, from september until August in the next year.
